Carol Terryberry grew up sailing on the Chesapeake Bay where she enjoyed both cruising and racing in large sailboats and one-designs. After taking sailing lessons at Hampton Yacht Club (HYC) as a child, she became an instructor as a teenager. Carol served as the Head Instructor for three years, managing approximately 120 kids for eight weeks each summer. Carol also ran a women’s sailing program at HYC with over fifty participants.

In 2001, after relocating to Elizabeth City, Carol started the Pasquotank River Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing camp.  The camp served about 40 kids per summer, sparking the founding of River City Community Sailing.
